Playing YouTube videos in the browser on the Raspberry Pi

This will allow you to stream up to 1080p youtube videos in the browser on the Raspberry pi using omxplayer. Its a crude hack but it seems to work pretty well on my system. Install instructions and a demonstration video are shown below.

You can install this by pulling the git repository and running the scripts below.
Commands to install are below (your user should have sudo privileges but you dont need to be root):

You may have to enable user scripts in Midori by going to Menu>Preferences>Extensions>UserScripts and clicking the check box.

sudo apt-get install git-core

git clone git://github.com/StevenHickson/PiAUISuite.git

cd PiAUISuite/Install/
./InstallAUISuite.sh

**NOTE, this will ask you if you want to install a lot of different scripts because it is a SUITE. You only have to pick the ones you want to use. If you only want to use the youtube scripts, press n on any other question except for the dependencies and youtube.

Update Instructions 

cd PiAUISuite

git pull

cd Install

sudo ./UpdateAUISuite.sh

Demonstration

There is a lot of misinformation out there on how to do this. Using gnash or HTML5 is going to result in a frame rate so slow it can be considered unworkable. Ive tried both of them out and you cant really watch videos with them. XBMC has a youtube plugin but it is buggy and crashes often.

Ive been playing youtube videos using the command line and my voicecommand using the scripts found here.

After seeing a couple people ask about playing youtube in the browser last night, I decided to go ahead and do that and create some user scripts for midori which allow the browser to utilize the same hack.

Here is the technical overview:

I created a script called youtube which uses the youtube-dl -g flag to grab the video URL. It also handles playlists and other parsing. Then it passes that video URL to omxplayer for it to stream. 

Next I registered a new URL protocol yt:// and made it pass its information to the youtube program whenever it runs. 

Finally, I created a user script in Midori which simply replaces all http://youtube.com/watch?* URLs with yt://youtube.com/watch?*.

Why attend USENIX Enigma

Parisa Tabriz, Security Princess & Enigma Program Co-Chair

Last August, we announced USENIX Enigma, a new conference intended to shine a light on great, thought-provoking research in security, privacy, and electronic crime. With Enigma beginning in just a few short weeks, I wanted to share a couple of the reasons I’m personally excited about this new conference.

Enigma aims to bridge the divide that exists between experts working in academia, industry, and public service, explicitly bringing researchers from different sectors together to share their work. Our speakers include those spearheading the defense of digital rights (Electronic Frontier Foundation, Access Now), practitioners at a number of well known industry leaders (Akamai, Blackberry, Facebook, LinkedIn, Netflix, Twitter), and researchers from multiple universities in the U.S. and abroad. With the diverse session topics and organizations represented, I expect interesting—and perhaps spirited—coffee break and lunchtime discussions among the equally diverse list of conference attendees.

Of course, I’m very proud to have some of my Google colleagues speaking at Enigma:

• Adrienne Porter Felt will talk about blending research and engineering to solve usable security problems. You’ll hear how Chrome’s usable security team runs user studies and experiments to motivate engineering and design decisions. • Elie Bursztein will go through key lessons the Gmail team learned over the past 11 years while protecting users from spam, phishing, malware, and web attacks. Illustrated with concrete numbers and examples from one of the largest email systems on the planet, attendees will gain insight into specific techniques and approaches useful in fighting abuse and securing their online services.

In addition to raw content, my Program Co-Chair, David Brumley, and I have prioritized talk quality. Researchers dedicate months or years of their time to thinking about a problem and conducting the technical work of research, but a common criticism of technical conferences is that the actual presentation of that research seems like an afterthought. Rather than be a regurgitation of a research paper in slide format, a presentation is an opportunity for a researcher to explain the context and impact of their work in their own voice; a chance to inspire the audience to want to learn more or dig deeper. Taking inspiration from the TED conference, Enigma will have shorter presentations, and the program committee has worked with each speaker to help them craft the best version of their talk.

PowerShell v2 v3 Testing to see if a Folder or File Exists

These are mainly for me to jot down as reminders for myself. If I want to determine if file system object is a file (leaf) or folder (directory) I can use these two tests:

1. Test folder: Test-Path -PathC: est -PathTypeContainer
2. Test file: Test-Path -PathC: est -PathType Leaf 

$False, in these cases, can indicate two things:

1. The item does not exist
2. The item is not the PathType indicated

Be sure you know which you are testing for.

Just go to my computer->tools->folder options->go to the view tab.
Now uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types.Press apply.
Now rename ur text files as bat files.

Use the Notepad as your personal diary

There is a simple feature in Notepad that can make it work like a personal diary for you.Here is how to go about it:

2. Now write .LOG as the first line in the file, then press enter. Now save the file and close it.

PowerShell v2 Find Control Characters in Text File

Lets say you are trying to load a file (totally hypothetical) and your system (hypothetically again) yells at you.  Knowing folks (not any one in particular, but, those imaginary troublemakers out there) will occasionally forget to mention that control characters (anything in the hex range 0x00 - 0x17) might be in a file I needed to find a way to identify just which lines in a given file might be posing problems.  So, I can up with this:

PS > Get-Content C:someimaginaryfile.txt -ReadCount 1 | % { if($_ -match "[x00-x17]") {$_} }

If you are using regular expressions to format a range to examine, you will want to use the xdd syntax where dd is just a two character string representing the character you want to filter for. I was reminded of this tidbit here:

regex not matching certain characters

Since this never happens in the real world, hopefully this is for naught as it will have no effect on anyone out there in the ether.

Moore’s Law Part 3 Possible extrapolations over the next 15 years and impact

This is the third entry of a series focused on Moore’s Law and its implications moving forward, edited from a White paper on Moore’s Law, written by Google University Relations Manager Michel Benard. This series quotes major sources about Moore’s Law and explores how they believe Moore’s Law will likely continue over the course of the next several years. We will also explore if there are fields other than digital electronics that either have an emerging Moores Law situation, or promises for such a Law that would drive their future performance.

We examine data from the ITRS 2012 Overall Roadmap Technology Characteristics (ORTC 2012), and select notable interpolations; The chart below shows chip size trends up to the year 2026 along with the “Average Moore’s Law” line. Additionally, in the ORTC 2011 tables we find data on 3D chip layer increases (up to 128 layers), including costs. Finally, the ORTC 2011 index sheet estimates that the DRAM cost per bit at production will be ~0.002 microcents per bit by ~2025. From these sources we draw three More Moore (MM) extrapolations, that by the year 2025:

• 4Tb Flash multi-level cell (MLC) memory will be in production
• There will be ~100 billion transistors per microprocessing unit (MPU)
• 1TB RAM Memory will cost less than $100

More than Moore
It should be emphasized that “More than Moore” (MtM) technologies do not constitute an alternative or even a competitor to the digital trend as described by Moore’s Law. In fact, it is the heterogeneous integration of digital and non-digital functionalities into compact systems that will be the key driver for a wide variety of application fields. Whereas MM may be viewed as the brain of an intelligent compact system, MtM refers to its capabilities to interact with the outside world and the users.

As such, functional diversification may be regarded as a complement of digital signal and data processing in a product. This includes the interaction with the outside world through sensors and actuators and the subsystem for powering the product, implying analog and mixed signal processing, the incorporation of passive and/or high-voltage components, micro-mechanical devices enabling biological functionalities, and more. While MtM looks very promising for a variety of diversification topics, the ITRS study does not give figures from which “solid” extrapolations can be made. However, we can make safe/not so safe bets going towards 2025, and examine what these extrapolations mean in terms of the user.

Today we have a 1TB hard disk drives (HDD) for $100, but the access speed to data on the disk does not allow to take full advantage of this data in a fully interactive, or even practical, way. More importantly, the size and construction of HDD does not allow for their incorporation into mobile devices, Solid state drives (SSD), in comparison, have similar data transfer rates (~1Gb/s), latencies typically 100 times less than HDD, and have a significantly smaller form factor with no moving parts. The promise of offering several TB of flash memory, cost effectively by 2025, in a device carried along during the day (e.g. smartphone, watch, clothing, etc.) represents a paradigm shift with regard of today’s situation; it will empower the user by moving him/her from an environment where local data needs to be refreshed frequently (as with augmented reality applications) to a new environment where full contextual data will be available locally and refreshed only when critically needed.

If data is pre-loaded in the order of magnitude of TBs, one will be able to get a complete contextual data set loaded before an action or a movement, and the device will dispatch its local intelligence to the user during the progress of the action, regardless of network availability or performance. This opens up the possibility of combining local 3D models and remote inputs, allowing applications like 3D conferencing to become available. The development and use of 3D avatars could even facilitate many social interaction models. To benefit from such applications the use of personal devices such as Google Glass may become pervasive, allowing users to navigate 3D scenes and environments naturally, as well as facilitating 3D conferencing and their “social” interactions.

Double click on a drive opens in new window

Problem:
When i double-click on a drive, it opens in new window. What is the problem, Is it because of a virus. Please help me.

Solution:

• Open any explorer window, Click on Tools >> Folder options >> View.
• Click on restore defaults.

If this does not solve your problem the it may be because of a virus attack.
You can perform the following steps to get rid of this.

Solution 1

1. Open start menu and click Run.
2. Type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
3. Click Ok and if this message shows “DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shell32.dll succeeded” that means the problem is solved.

Solution 2

1. In Run type regedit.exe to open the registry editor.
2. Traverse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Directory/Shell
3. Double click on the default value on right and set it as “none”.
4. Repeat the procedure for the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Drive/Shell.

Solution 3
Alternatively, you can download a registry file and merge it with your registry by double clocking it. Reboot your system after merging the file.
One of the methods listed above will definitely solve your problem.

Google Award Program stimulates Journalism and CS collaboration

Last fall, Google invited academic researchers to participate in a Computational Journalism awards program focused on the intersection of Computer Science and Journalism. We solicited proposals for original research projects relevant to today’s fast evolving news industry.

As technology continues to shape and be shaped by the media landscape, applicants were asked to rethink traditional models and roles in the ecosystem, and reimagine the lifecycle of the news story in the online world. We encouraged them to develop innovative tools and open source software that could benefit readers and be game-changers for reporters and publishers. Each award includes funding of $60,000 in cash and $20,000 in computing credits on Google’s Cloud Platform.

We congratulate the recipients of these awards, whose projects are described below, and look forward to the results of their research. Stay tuned for updates on their progress.

Project: Thematic Characterization of News Stories

In collaboration with journalism and computer science students, we will develop applications utilizing these methods in the creation, distribution, and consumption of news content.

Project: Tracing Reuse in Political Language
Our goal in this project is to research, and then develop a data-mining tool that allows an online researcher to find and trace language reuse. By language reuse, we specifically mean: Can we find if in a current text some language was used that can be traced back to some other text or script. The technical innovation in this project is aimed at (1) identifying linguistic reuse in documents as well as other forms of material, which can be converted to text, and therefore includes political speeches and videos. Another innovation will be in (2) how linguistic reuse can be traced through the web and online social networks.

RumorLens is a tool that will aid journalists in finding posts that spread or correct a particular rumor on Twitter, by exploring the size of the audiences that those posts have reached. In the collection phase, the user provides one or a few exemplar tweets and then manually classifies a few hundred others as spreading the rumor, correcting it, or labeling it as unrelated. This enables automatic retrieval and classification of remaining tweets, which are then presented in an interactive visualization that shows audience sizes.

Microsoft announces release of universal translator

The Guardian reports that Microsoft is to release a near real time voice translator as Skype Translator by the end of this year. The service will first appear on Windows 8 but is expected to be rolled out to other platforms quickly. In a demo at the Code conference Skype Translator translated English to German and vice versa nearly perfectly. The video below explains how this works.

Making online learning even easier with a re envisioned Course Builder

The Course Builder team believes in enabling new and better ways to learn (for both the instructor and learner). Todays release of Course Builder v1.10 furthers these goals in three ways, by being easier to use, embeddable and applicable to more types of content.

Easier to use
We took a step back and re-envisioned the menus and navigation of the administrative interface based on the steps instructors take as they create a course. These are designed to help you through the process of creating, styling, publishing and managing your courses. This re-imagined design gives a solid foundation for future versions of Course Builder.

A completely redesigned navigation simplifies content authoring and configuration.

To support this redesign, we’ve also completely revamped our documentation. There’s now one home for all of Course Builder’s materials: Google Open Online Education. Here, you’ll find everything you need to conceptualize and construct your content, create a course using Course Builder, and even develop new modules to extend Course Builder’s capabilities. The content now reflects the latest features and organization. This re-imagined design gives a solid foundation for future versions of Course Builder.

Embeddable assessment support
What if you want to use some of Course Builder’s features but already have an existing learning site? To help with these situations, Course Builder now supports embeddable assessments (graded questions and answers with an optional due date). Simply create your assessments in Course Builder, copy the JavaScript snippet and paste it on any site. Your users will be able to complete the assessments from the comfort of your existing site and you’ll be able to benefit from Course Builder’s per-question feedback, auto-grading and analytics with just two short lines of code that are automatically generated for you.

We started with embeddable assessments because evaluation is so important to learning, but we don’t plan to stop there. Watch for additional embeddable components in the future.

Many types of online learning content, like tutorials, exercises and documentation, are a lot like online courses. For instance, they might involve presenting content to users, having them do exercises or assessments and allowing them to stop and return later. Yet, you might not think of them as traditional courses.

To make Course Builder a better fit for a broader set of online content, we’ve added a new “guides” experience. Guides are a new way for students to browse and consume your content. Compared to typical online courses -- which can enforce a strict linear path (from unit 1 to unit 2, etc.) -- guides present your content as a non-numbered list. Users are free to enter and exit in any order. It also allows you to show the content for many courses together.

You could imagine each guide being a documentation page or tutorial section. Guides also work with any existing Course Builder units and can be made available by simply enabling that feature in the dashboard. Here are a couple of our courses, when viewed as guides:

Within each guide, the user is guided through the steps, which could be portions of a docs page or lessons in a unit, as in this example from the “Power Searching with Google” sample course:

By letting users jump in and out of the content as they like, guides are ideally suited to the on-the-go learner and look great on phones and tablets. It’s our first foray into responsive mobile design... but it won’t be our last.

Guides currently support public courses, but we’ll be adding registration, enhanced statefulness and interface customization, as well as elements of dynamic learning (think of a personalized list of guides).

This release has focused on making Course Builder easier to use and more relevant. It sets up the framework to give future features a natural home. It adds embeddable assessments to make Course Builder useful in more places. And it introduces guides, a new, less linear format for consuming content.

Powershell v2 Function Get EnabledUserflags
