The average eReader holds hundreds to over a thousand ebooks at a time. The Kindle, available from Amazon, is currently the leader of the pack, but whole hordes of eReaders are nipping at its heels, like the Sony eReader, the Nook and the Alex. In addition, there are still more digital book readers coming to the marketplace with improved bells and whistles and lower prices. That is good news for consumers, but it still leaves us all with a big unanswered question: just how to you buy a eReader?

   Look for an eReader that feels comfortable in your hand. These electronic book readers are thin and lightweight, but dont expect any standardized sizing. The newest Kindle, an already downsized version of the original, is 8" x 5.3" x 0.36" while the Sony Reader Pocket Edition is much smaller at 6.25" x 4.25" x 0.40". If you can, test out the feel of these digital book readers before buying. In the case of products only sold online, like the Kindle, try to find someone who already owns one and will will to let you to take it for a test read.

2. Step 2

   Choose an eReader with a good screen, resolution and reflection. Again, theres no standardization and each manufacturer produces different size screens and as well as resolution.    Determine how much battery life for your eReader you will be happy with. Some eReaders can go for one to two weeks without recharging. Some eReader manufacturers refer to battery life as "page turns." The more page turns, the longer time you have to read before recharging.

   Select "Brightness" to change the monitors brightness and contrast control. Press the "Menu/Select" button to confirm your selection.

IDC Solid state drive hard disk speed gap small

Dell will sell you a 128GB solid state drive for an unprecedented $649. But wait. An IDC report claims the performance gap between solid state drives and lower-cost high-performance hard disk drives is not that significant at the system level.

Solid state drives are attracting more scrutiny as they increase in capacity and decrease in price. (Dells $649 drive is a radical price drop since many drives with half the capacity still sell for more than $700.)

Solid state drives (SSDs) are considered to be generally more power efficient, faster, and in some respects more reliable than hard disk drives.

IDC tested 2.5-inch 7200 rpm desktop drives against SSDs and found that previous tests comparing SSDs and hard disk drives may be misleading, according to SearchStorage.com, which cited the IDC report.

"Many tests have been done comparing 4200 rpm hard drives to SSDs," said IDC analyst David Reinsel. "But 5400 rpm is now mainstream and even 7200 rpm disks are available." The IDC report says the performance gap between computers with 7200 rpm 2.5-inch drives and those with SSDs was smaller than expected because the performance of the entire system must be taken into account.

(It should be noted that 4200 rpm hard disk drives are sometimes used in comparative testing because 4200 rpm drives are offered along with SSDs in laptops such as the MacBook Air and Hewlett-Packard 2510p.)

IDCs Reinsel also said that system redesigns will be necessary in both PCs and enterprise storage systems to reap the full benefits of SSDs. One of the challenges is that SSDs generally write data more slowly than they read data.

In related news, The Tech Report also did benchmarking of SSDs and 2.5-inch hard disk drives rated at 5400 and 7200 rpm. Generally, the SSDs were faster (in some cases much faster) but not in every benchmark and not by that much in some benchmarks.

SSDs have received a lot more attention since companies like Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and Toshiba have adopted them as alternatives to hard disk drives in laptops. Lesser known is that SSDs are also being deployed by large corporations in server-related applications. Companies like Citibank and American Express peg server performance on IOPS or input/output operations per second where SSDs beat hard disk drives handily.

The IDC report follows other reviews that claim solid state drives (SSDs) are not as power efficient as manufacturers claim--though the power-efficiency testing methodology used by some review sites .

A lot of old stuff still exists out there.  There is an ancient URL for Google that was once used to get to iGoogle.  This URL can be modified to your region and the "Get to Google faster" nuisance message does not appear.

As an example the usual URL for Google Australia is "https://www.google.com.au/".  The nuisance nag always shows at the top of the Google page when I start Internet Explorer.

If I use the URL "http://www.google.com.au/webhp?nord=1" as the start page the nag message does not appear, but the normal Google au search page appears.

Just modify the URL for your region.

If you are in the uk use the URL "http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?nord=1".

No need to download  Adblock 1.3.10. and enter "##DIV#mgmhppd" as a new filter rule.

Just use the URL as set out above.

The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) is a network standard that defines the size of communication packets that travel along a network path. Data packets are bits of information that are sent from the source computer to the destination. The MTU decides the size of these packets, and the size must be consistent across all machines on the network. The MTU size of a network is determined by the protocol, and most home and office networks are ethernet based. You can change the MTU setting when some computers on a network are experiencing problems but the rest of the network isnt affected. Usually, you can change a computer routers MTU setting by accessing it through your web browser.

Instructions

Linksys Router

1. Step 1

   Open your web browser and type in the routers IP address. The default value for a Linksys router setup is 192.168.1.1. Enter your routers admin username and password. The default username for Linksys is blank and the password is "admin."

2. Step 2

   Click the "Advanced" tab at the top of the window. Within this screen, click the "Filters" link. Within this screen, scroll down to the MTU option and check the box labeled "Enable."

3. Step 3

   Enter a new MTU size in the text box. This value should be between 1400 and 1492. A good value to start with is 1454. Change the value as necessary until the network issues are resolved. Click the "Save Settings" button when you are finished.

   Open a browser window and navigate to the IP address of the router. The default IP address for a D-link router installation is 192.168.0.1.
