Using your RPi2 for Valentines Day

Thought I would share something cool I did with my Raspberry Pi that others might like for Valentines day.

I basically had a lot of devices sitting around that I realized I could amalgamate together for a good Valentines day surprise for my girlfriend.

First off I had my robotic bartender (bottender), which you can see in my Hackaday projects page.
I modified it so that it would pour wine on command.

Next I had a set of WeMo light switches that you can get here:

Belkin WeMo Light Switch, Wi-Fi Enabled

These are really nicely made. They are easy to install WiFi-enabled and it is easy to interface with them using our custom API.
I found a nice API for the wemo light switches here.
In the end though, I ended up creating a simple shell script API that uses CURL. You can see mine on github here.

I set up my WeMo light switch to control my bedroom fan. Then I sprinkled the top with rose petals.
Connecting this all together, I have a button on my phone that turns the fan on, sprinkling rose petals down, and turns bottender on, pouring two glasses of wine. Resulting in this:

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

This day in history the first tweet

On March 21 2006 Jack Dorsey sent the very first tweet. Like many tweets not especially informative and presumable Jack didnt have many, if any, followers. Twitter was opened to the public that July and had its first major success at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in 2007, shortly after it had been made into a company. And the rest< as they say, is history. You can follow me and this blog @driwatson

Day 2 Stonehenge and Portobello Road

Day 3 now in a coach, on the way to our hotel in Brussels. Local time here is quarter to 5 in the afternoon. Im hoping I can get to try their famous beef here.

Compared to yesterday, day two is a much more relaxed one. Golden Tours coach fetched us around 720am and we stopped to pick up other folks in 5 different hotels. Travel time to the Stonehenge area was nearly two hours.

Honestly speaking, I was surprised on how small the Stonehenge is. I was expecting massive rock structures that I would need to look up to. Although not that huge, there was this eerie feeling when you are near them. We only got to go around it because there is a premium if you want to go in. We only got the Simple Stonehenge tour. What it does is they drop you off there and leave you at Gloucester road.

We also get to try the Thames River Cruise and the London Eye. London Eye for me was just so-so. Its similar to the Singapore Flyer, only with a different view of course. Inside each capsule was a bunch of Samsung Galaxy Tabs that you can use as a guide to things you see around. It was a bit expensive at 18.90 pounds per person (around 1,230 pesos)

The highlight of the day though for me was the Portobello Road walk. It was just like in the movies! Antique shops, local crepes, modern goods. The street was not crowded as we dropped by in the afternoon already. To end the walk, we had some local fish and chips at a cozy restaurant while watching the Wimbledon match, live!

Also, we went to the Museum of Brands and Packaging. It was full of vintage stuff like soap packaging from the 40s, chocolate boxes with chocolates from the 30s and more vintage! Not for everyone but its a must for vintage-stuff lovers! I even saw toys from the late 1800s! That was it for day two. Enjoyed the last bit a lot!

After reaching our hotel in a few, we are going to the Grand Palace tonight in Brussels and going to try some old fashioned Belgian beer. Im not a beer drinker but hey, Im already there so might as well. :)
